Annual Dinner 2019
The last event of the President’s year is of course the Annual Dinner and this year it was held at Purley Downs Golf Club for the first time. We had 66 members and their guests who enjoyed a delicious meal and we were entertained by Paul Dickson and his close-up magic.
The President was delighted to present this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award to Dr John Annear and Dr Mary Clarke spoke movingly about Dr Annear’s contribution to mental health in Croydon throughout his 40-year career.
Our Speaker was Professor Tim Draycott, Consultant at Southmead Hospital and the University of Bristol. Over the last 14 years Tim has led the development of a new academic department in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at North Bristol that is now recognised as a world leading intrapartum and safety research centre.
Professor Draycott’s programme of work has been recognised by prizes from NHS Innovations, NICE, and the BMJ. He was also awarded Hospital Doctor of the Year for his intrapartum emergencies work. He has been recognised as a NHS Hero, and in 2014 he and the PROMPT team were awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Excellence, followed by the International Prize for Resilience in Healthcare in 2016.
Professor Draycott is the senior clinical advisor to NHS Resolution in the UK, and is an elected member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists Council representing members from America, Australasia and the Pacific Rim.
Professor Draycott gave a very entertaining talk with topics ranging from personal experience in developing countries, meeting the Queen and highlighting the value of simulation training in dealing with obstetric emergencies.
